“Dancing Squid Rice Bowl”

Remember that scene in the amazing Park Chan-wook revenge thriller “Oldboy” where the protagonist Oh-Daesu ate a live octopus? That’s apparently a Korean delicacy. In Japan, they prefer to take a squid, cut off its head, and serve it on a bed of rice. The catch? It dances.

Known as “odoi-don,” or in English “dancing squid rice bowl,” this popular Japanese dish is nothing more than a variation on squid sashimi. When prepared alive, it’s known as ikizukuri. While popular in Asia, it’s banned in Australia.
